A new study has found that Nevada is among the most anxious states in the U.S.
Medical marijuana card experts at Leafwell have analyzed CDC data on the percentage of adults over the age of 18 in the U.S. who report suffering from anxiety disorder symptoms. They looked at each state and ranked them from highest to lowest percentage as of October 2023 data.
Nationally, the percentage of adults reporting that they suffer from symptoms of anxiety disorder is 28.7%.
Just over half of the states in the U.S. report less than this percentage, including Minnesota, with only 23.7% of its population having reported symptoms of anxiety disorders.
Anxiety is a persistent and excessive feeling of fear or unease. These feelings can have physical effects, such as fatigue or difficulty concentrating. According to the CDC, the age groups who suffer the most from anxiety are those between 18-29, with 41.9%, and those between 30-39, with 34.5%.
West Virginia ranks as the most anxious state, with 40.1% of its population reporting anxiety disorder symptoms. According to a report from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 47% of West Virginians did not receive the healthcare needed because of cost.
Louisiana is second, with 36.6% of the population reporting symptoms of anxiety disorders. 18% were unable to get the therapy required for treatment, and 8% of the population were uninsured, according to a NAMI report.
Utah ranks third, with 35% of its population over 18 reporting symptoms of anxiety disorders. A NAMI report states that over two million people in Utah live in areas with a low amount of mental health professionals. The state also had an increase of 7.1% in reports of anxiety symptoms since the start of 2023.
Alabama is fourth on the list, with 34% of the population reporting having experienced symptoms of anxiety disorder. 794,000 adults were reported by NAMI as having a mental health disorder in Alabama.
Oklahoma is fifth, with 33.8% of its population reporting symptoms of anxiety disorders. Since the start of 2023, there has been a 3.6% increase in reports of anxiety symptoms.
