New York, NY (August 25, 2021) – Susan G. Komen, the world’s leading breast cancer organization, announced today that its signature fundraising event in Greater New York City will be held on Sunday, September 12th. The 2021 event will not be held in its traditional fashion again this year due to ongoing health concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic, but instead will unite people together from homes and neighborhoods all across the area. This year’s event provides new ways to engage and experience Komen’s mission, while enabling you to connect with the Komen breast cancer community from your own home or neighborhood, while showing the power of ONE community coming together to fund ONE mission of ending breast cancer forever.

“We are excited to join together as one community,” said Stacie Spitzkoff, Executive Director of Komen Greater New York City. “The health and safety of our community are, and always have been, our top priorities. After consulting with government health guidance and monitoring the evolving risk to our community, many of whom have compromised immune systems and may be unable to receive a COVID vaccine, we will unite as ONE community from homes and neighborhoods across the area. No matter where you are, we all feel the presence of our ONE community every step of the way.”

The local event will feature a new audio experience and community scavenger hunt during their race or walk to help bring the community of hope and compassion together in a new way while they raise funds to save lives from breast cancer. The audio experience will showcase those touched by breast cancer and why they race/walk and fundraise.

Funds raised by the community support Komen’s investments in breakthrough research, needed patient care and public policy action at all levels of government. The support and commitment from Komen’s participants, sponsors, and partners allow the organization to continue saving lives. Komen Greater New York City’s 2021 Race for the Cure sponsors include Pfizer, PepsiCo, Key Food Stores Cooperative, Inc., NewYork Post, and CBS News. Together, we are working to discover the cures while supporting people facing breast cancer today, ensuring everyone can get the care they need to live.

For over 30 years, the Greater New York City Race for the Cure has raised significant awareness and funds for breast cancer, as well as celebrated and honored those who have been impacted. Join us on Sunday, September 12th, as we come together virtually to share our stories, support one another, and raise money to save lives! Whether you participate for your friend who is newly diagnosed, your sister living with breast cancer, for yourself as a survivor, or in memory of a loved one, we are stronger when we join together.

Leading up to Race Day, join Komen Greater New York City for Power of ONE Week - ONE final week, and ONE final push, to make a huge impact in the fight against breast cancer. Sunday, September 5th through Saturday, September 11th, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in daily themed activities and challenges that will encourage FUN and FUNDRAISING.

On Race Day, join Komen Greater New York City online, via Facebook Live or Zoom, for a moving and interactive virtual opening ceremony featuring survivor testimonials, sponsor highlights, and a dynamic Q&A session between Komen researchers, patient navigators, breast cancer thrivers, and advocates – moderated by Komen President and Chief Executive Officer, Paula Schneider.

After the opening ceremony, people will be encouraged to race/walk in their neighborhood, local park, or wherever they are able to safely gather with your family, friends, and team members. While participants race/walk, they can tune in to their preferred podcast streaming platform to listen to the ONE Audio Experience to hear personal stories from those touched by breast cancer. We also invite people to participate in a variety of fun and interactive activities using Komen Greater New York City’s ONE Community Experience Checklist to be emailed to participants prior to event day. Throughout Race Day, help the ONE Komen community create a one-of-a-kind Photo Mosaic by uploading photos to social media, using the hashtags #ONEKomen and #racefortheCURE. Finish the incredible Race Day by snapping a photo of yourself, or with loved ones, using the Finish Line Moment photo technology!
