As the year comes to a close, the team at essay writing service, EssayHub, dove into the data to see which words Americans are having a hard time spelling this year.Using Google Trends data, the experts ranked the top searches for "How do you spell..." in each and every state to see which weird and wonderful words Americans struggled to get their heads around.Whether it's for an important document or a text to a friend, there are plenty of words – both simple and complex – that everyone needs a hand with spelling, from time to time.Americans may be surprised to find that out of the fifty states that not a single one Googled How to spell Mississippi the most.Beautiful, business and dessert were among some of the commonly misspelt words with multiple “S”’s searched.
The people of Wisconsin searched the word ‘lose’ the most, meaning that there could be confusion as to whether they should use the verb lose or the adjective loose.New Hampshire also queried with a similar concept as their most Googled search was ‘their’. Meaning that people were possibly checking up to see which version of the word they should use, rather than how to spell it.On the other hand, it seems as though Idahoans and West Virginians both had a tough time spelling the name of their own state.Utah and Tennessee had difficulty spelling ‘boutonniere’ and ‘pneumonia’ which were some of the more difficult and distinctive words throughout the state list.
A spokesperson for EssayHub commented: “This data highlighted some commonly misspelt words that you’d expect to see, for example, business and dessert, which can be confusing because of the number S’s.“However, perhaps what is more shocking, is that it appears the people of Idaho and West Virginia, are frequently searching how to spell the name of their own states with the same being said for the inhabitants of Hawaii, who Googled how to spell the island of Kauai, more than any other word.“Many of the words on the list are certainly challenging and may have different variations, so double checking, and ensuring you have the correct spelling in documents is paramount.”
